Melbourne council approves application to IEDA housing rehab program

Mayor John White opened and closed a public hearing April 9 and the Melbourne City Council approved Resolution 18-04-01 to seek funding through the Iowa Economic Development Authority’s Owner-Occupied Housing Improvement Fund.
Mark Newman, identified with Region 6, said applications filed last year remain sufficient for re-evaluation and that the program requires participating homeowners to be at or below 80 percent of Marshall County’s median income, with awards expected in August and projects completed within a three-year maximum timeframe. The city will file applications in May and Region 6 will re-evaluate applications already on file and accept new ones at that time.
The council closed the hearing on a motion by Stahl, seconded by Bunting, and approved the resolution by roll-call vote (all ayes). The approval authorizes city staff to submit the city’s applicants to the IEDA program; specific award amounts and the final list of recipients will be set by IEDA later in the summer.
The council did not record any public objections during the published hearing period. Next procedural steps are for the clerk to file the application in May and for Region 6 to complete its re-evaluation before awards are announced in August.
