Council approves three building permits, grants variance for Goodrich garage

Melbourne City Council approved three building permits and granted a variance for a garage at its Aug. 13 meeting.
The council voted to approve permits for Douglas and Sandra Nelson at 15 3rd Street (garage), Thomas Yetmar at 15 1st Avenue (45-by-30 building) and John Elliott/Kenny Poage at 402 3rd Street (10-by-20 shed). The motion to approve the three permits was made by Councilman Gibbs and seconded by Councilman C. White; the vote was recorded as "all ayes."
Council also considered a variance request from Gabe Goodrich for a garage at 402 Main Street. The requested siting would place the structure 6 feet from the south property line (zoning requires 7 feet) and 4.5 feet from the line running parallel to 4th Street (zoning requires 7 feet). The minutes note there was no response from neighbors to the variance notice. Councilman Juel moved to approve the variance; Councilman C. White seconded, and the vote was recorded as "all ayes."
A separate application from Brian Cross for a 32-by-30 building (605 2nd Avenue) will require a variance for a 6-foot setback, but the council deferred action because there was insufficient time to publish the required public hearing notice in the paper before the meeting. The city will publish the notice and mail letters ahead of the Sept. meeting.
The council did not record statements from neighbors in the minutes beyond those who expressly objected; no specific conditions or fees were recorded for the approved permits.
