Mendota Heights to pursue geothermal feasibility at Public Works after state planning grant

The Mendota Heights Natural Resources Commission on Feb. 11 reviewed plans to study geothermal energy at the city’s Public Works facility after the city received a Geothermal Planning Grant from the Minnesota Department of Commerce.
Natural Resources Manager Krista Spreiter told commissioners the grant will fund technical and economic feasibility work. The city issued a Request for Proposals, received four proposals and selected HGA consultants to lead the project; a kickoff meeting with HGA and city staff took place in January.
Spreiter said the immediate next step is hiring a contractor to perform test bore drilling on the Public Works site. She said the drilling process, once started, is likely to take about one week and that HGA will coordinate contractor selection through the RFP process. Photographs of the site were shown to the commission during the meeting.
The project aligns with the city’s recently adopted Energy Action Plan and its partnership with Xcel Energy through the Partners in Energy program, Spreiter said, and is part of the Sustainability Committee’s goal to evaluate sustainable and renewable energy options for Mendota Heights.
There was no formal vote required on the grant update; commissioners discussed the timeline and next steps. Staff will return with additional contractor details and a schedule for on-site work once the contractor is selected and a drilling date is set.
