Gaylord council approves vacation of Tower Street after public hearing

The Gaylord City Council voted to vacate Tower Street on a motion supported by council members after a staff presentation and public hearing.
City staff told the council the street was reconstructed in 2024 and is primarily used by Michael Foods for employee and contractor access. The proposed resolution would transfer the street to adjacent property ownership while preserving public easements for the city’s water tower and water and sewer lines and providing Xcel Energy the easements it needs for substation access.
During the public hearing staff said written notices were sent to the adjoining property owner and to utilities, and that CenterPoint Energy responded with no issues. No members of the public objected during the hearing.
The council approved Resolution 2026-01 finding Tower Street “no longer needed for public access or circulation” and that the vacation is consistent with prior planning for the area. The resolution passed by voice vote.
Staff said the city will retain easements for maintenance and access to utility infrastructure once the street is vacated; exact maintenance responsibilities and boundaries are specified in the legal description included with the resolution packet. The council’s action does not alter required utility access for Xcel Energy or the city’s rights to maintain the water tower.
