Residents press Southampton Committee to restore 25 mph limit on Hawkin Road

Several residents used the public-comment portion of the Aug. 21, 2018 Southampton Township meeting to press the Committee on local concerns, most prominently a request to reduce the Hawkin Road speed limit.
Mayor James F. Young, Sr. opened the public-comment period. Residents from Hawkin Road presented reasons why they disagreed with the findings of a speed study and asked that the speed limit be reduced to 25 mph for the residential area. Pauline Taylor (446 New Road) and Pat Topham argued that if Hawkin Road is residential the same standard should apply to nearby New Road; they also said enforcement is lacking.
Bill Kelly of Floyd Ave. read minutes from June and disputed a statement that the company Allied was being harassed by the Township, saying "The Township Administrator is doing her job; how is that harassment?" Ken Hartman of Leisuretown raised possible code-enforcement matters on Township property and concerns about a detention basin. Evie Dougherty of Leisuretown thanked Mayor Young and Committeeman Ronald Heston for voting their conscience and also raised a complaint about brush pickup in Leisuretown.
Deputy Mayor William Raftery addressed recent Leisuretown power outages earlier in the meeting and said the new OEM and deputy OEM should coordinate with utilities when outages occur. A representative of the Vincent Fire Department reported calls for service and monthly activities. With no further public comment, Mayor Young closed the public portion and the Committee adjourned at 10:15 p.m.
