South Bloomfield council sets event dates, hires shelter-house cleaner and adjusts office hours

The Village of South Bloomfield council covered a range of community events and operational items during its Jan. 20 meeting, including scheduling, staffing and logistics for several seasonal activities.
Council discussed continuing movie nights in 2026 and considering a local vendor after problems last year; Amber Murphy led that conversation. Murphy also asked for at least five volunteers to set up the Valentine’s Party; set-up is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on Feb. 7 and the event will run 5:00–7:00 p.m. that evening. Council chose to purchase cookies from GFS to stay within the event budget, and Chief Michael Maynard asked volunteers to contact the police department for a quick background check.
Lisa McDorman said she had set food-truck dates with COFTA for the second and fourth Fridays from May 8 through Sept. 30, and she reported multiple trucks had already signed up. Amber raised concerns about DJ placement at last year’s Halloween Fest and proposed moving the DJ to a more central park location or hiring a second DJ to improve sound coverage.
Administrator Joe Allen confirmed he hired Dena Cobb as the shelter-house cleaner. Lisa McDorman noted some responsibilities previously handled by Dena will need reassignment; Nicole Jenkins volunteered to take over flower planting at the municipal building. Yard-sale dates were set for June 5–6 and July 31–Aug. 1, with dumpster days to follow those weekends.
Mayor Aaron Thomas said the council agreed to restore village office hours to 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, effective Feb. 1. Tiffany Nash from the county EMA also announced a vacancy on the county EMA board and invited interested council members to serve.
JD Serio raised a public-safety concern about vehicles rolling through the stop sign at Union and Northup Avenue; Chief Maynard said he would increase patrols in that area.
