Grand Island committee presses for ditch cleanup, asks for clarity on ice-rink timeline and DOT study

On a local ditch project, engineering is complete and a price on pipe has been obtained, but members said they have not yet seen final responses from the New York DEC about permitting and the length of ditch work allowable without higher-tier review. “We still have the permission to clean it... but if it's over a certain amount then it goes into the next tier,” a committee member said, recommending simultaneous cleaning and piping where feasible to avoid repeated mobilizations.
Members also discussed an ice-rink procurement issue: the rink vendor now requires full payment before starting production, which could push delivery about a year out even if funds are secured. Committee members said engineering and coordination with National Grid about power remain outstanding.
Separately, the town received notice of DOT activity: the state will mark utilities to support a DOT traffic study for the town center. Members voiced concerns about Parkway mowing and sight-line maintenance by DOT contractors and discussed escalation pathways to state contacts to improve mowing practices and reduce tick risks along trails.
Next steps: continue coordination with engineering and DEC on ditch work, follow up with National Grid and rink vendor on timing and power connections, and escalate DOT contacts as needed to address Parkway maintenance and sight-line concerns.
