Grand Island committee updates on Town Commons, kayak launch and Veterans Park splash pad

The committee heard several progress reports on parks projects, from design drawings to parts delivery and fundraising leads.

Chair reported that the Town Commons plan is moving slowly but there are potential private funding sources. “We have what we think is an in—an individual who knows somebody—but we haven't gotten there yet,” the Chair said, noting continuing conversations with foundations and local fundraising prospects.

Design work for a proposed kayak launch is nearly finished: engineering schematics, a parking layout and site elevations were described as about 99% ready for submission to the New York DEC and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Committee members urged a direct follow-up with engineers and grant leads to advance permits and funding.

The Veterans Park splash pad was described as largely funded but with remaining budget gaps. One member reported that parts are expected to be delivered imminently; members discussed storage logistics and substantial in-ground work required. The committee noted roughly three-quarters of needed funds are on hand and that additional amounts will be needed for fencing, utilities and bathrooms.

Consultants’ preliminary master-plan drawings (La Bella) showed concept proposals for park circulation, a pump track and new sidewalks; members emphasized the importance of placing projects on the master plan to qualify for outside grant funding.

Next steps: engineering submissions to permitting agencies, continued private-funding outreach for Town Commons, storage/logistics planning for incoming splash-pad parts and a fundraising/borrowing plan to cover remaining construction costs.
