First Selectperson Jason Hayes told the Board of Selectmen on June 23 that a large volunteer turnout completed significant repairs and cleanup at Granbrook Park, including sanding and sealing picnic tables, restoring the pergola, cleaning the snack shack and repainting vandalized playscape equipment with two coats of paint. "We had quite the turnout down there," Hayes said, and added that "the third and final item for the playscape was delivered, I believe, on Monday, yesterday," meaning the board is now arranging an installation date.
Hayes said the town is coordinating to borrow a large mobile surveillance unit temporarily while its own camera system is installed, though the logistics remain under discussion with "command." He described the mobile unit as a large parked unit that provides a 360-degree view of the park while the town completes its permanent installations.
The selectmen also heard details of the town's 250th anniversary schedule. Hayes said the Parks and Recreation department will open the celebration with a concert at East Granby Farms, featuring the 1980s band Shout, and noted a later concert and a 20-minute fireworks display planned for Friday, Aug. 21. The town is selling limited-edition 250th ornaments for $10 through the town clerk's office and online. East Granby will join neighboring Granby for events on July 3 (a bonfire at Salmon Brook) and a July 4 parade that will march from Granby High School to Salmon Brook Park; the fire department, an antique truck, veterans and other local groups are expected to participate.
Organizers also plan a community day paired with a dock derby on Sept. 13 at Granbrook Park and a time-capsule dedication by the East Granby Veterans Organization. Hayes said private donations from local businesses funded the Aug. 21 celebration events.
Hayes did not provide a firm installation date for the playscape and said the board is awaiting coordination on camera logistics. The board received no public comments on the park items during the meeting.
