Waterloo Local plans countywide active-shooter drill Oct. 31 with emergency partners

The Waterloo Local junior high will host an active-shooter exercise on Oct. 31 organized in coordination with Portage County Emergency Management Agency, the sheriff’s office and local fire departments, the junior high principal told the board.
“This is an active shooter drill ... in coordination with Portage County EMA, the sheriff’s office, Atwater and Randall Fire,” the junior high principal said, describing a multiagency simulation intended to align response steps across the county so districts can provide mutual aid if needed.
Officials said the exercise is more extensive than routine lockdown drills; it is designed to simulate a full response with county and municipal partners and to standardize procedures so neighboring districts can assist one another.
The principal said the county has conducted similar exercises in other communities and the goal is to eventually have all county schools run a comparable drill. The board was told there will be press releases notifying the public that Oct. 31 is a staff development/waiver day and not a regular student attendance day.
Board members did not vote on the drill; the report was informational and the district will follow up with public notices and operational details through school communications.
