Senator Bill Hamilton presented a $30,000 check to the Upshur County Commission on June 18, 2026, to support structural repairs to the Indian Camp Normal building, a historic structure more than a century old. Brian Huffman, representing the Indian Camp Followers, attended the meeting with other group members.
County Clerk Carol J. Smith explained the county's procedure for handling the grant funds: the check will be deposited and, after July 1, 2026, contractors' invoices for repairs can be submitted to the commission for payment. The agenda notes a contractor was scheduled to begin work on walls and roof rafter repairs on Aug. 1, 2026.
The funds came as part of legislative Local Economic Development Assistance; the agenda states each state senator is allotted $75,000 per year for such Community Participation Grants. Senator Hamilton attended the meeting in place of Senator Robbie Morris, who was unable to attend.
The commission took no additional formal actions beyond accepting the check and noting the invoice submission process. The commission's next regular meeting is scheduled for June 25, 2026, when follow-up items related to this award could appear if invoices are submitted.
