Berkley Board of Assessors approves FY2024 tax warrants, signs four exemptions and enters executive session

BERKLEY, Mass. — The Town of Berkley Board of Assessors convened Dec. 19, 2023, and approved several fiscal and administrative items, including the signing of three FY2024 tax warrants and the approval of four exemptions.
Chairman Mark Pettey Jr called the meeting to order at 10:03 a.m. The board voted unanimously to accept the minutes of its Dec. 12, 2023 meeting (the minutes record does not specify who moved or seconded the motion).
The board approved and signed three FY2024 warrants and commitments: the real-estate tax warrant for $8,050,690.32, a betterment warrant for $1,484.98 and a personal-property tax warrant for $181,497.08. Together the warrants total $8,233,174.38. No bills were presented for payment at the meeting.
The board also reviewed and approved four current exemption applications filed with the board: two listed as type 17C1/2 (elderly/surviving spouse) and two listed as type 41C (elderly).
Administrative items noted in the minutes included an employee appreciation luncheon hosted by the Board of Selectmen scheduled the same day from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the COA room at Town Hall; the assessor and the BOA chairman will conduct first-round interviews for assessor candidates on Dec. 19 (three candidates) and Dec. 20 (four candidates), with the Board of Selectmen interviewing final candidates.
The minutes record that staff member Gary Hoitt is investigating enrollment in two IAA courses via Zoom in 2024 — Course 102, Income Valuation (Feb. 1, 2, 8 and 9), and Course 201, Appraisal of Land (Apr. 5, 6, 12 and 13 — and that a Safety Committee meeting is scheduled for Jan. 30, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Hearing Room. The board noted that data collection in Berkley is ongoing, without additional detail.
