Public safety presented six agenda items, including a request to accept a $30,000 grant from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services to procure rifle-grade ballistic shields and helmets for the police department. The public-safety representative thanked Assemblywoman Carrie Warner for assistance in obtaining the grant.
The department also sought authorization for a contract with Traffic Systems Incorporated to install accessible pedestrian-signal equipment at 11 additional intersections, funded by a transportation improvement (TIP) grant; the speaker described these devices as providing auditory information for pedestrians with blindness or low vision.
Another agenda item proposed replacing a 22-year-old paint-striping machine, plus authorizing lease agreements for copier/scanner machines at fire stations. Public safety also recommended waiving false-alarm fees charged under the fee schedule for multiple unintentional alarms at the Italian American War Veterans post, which the department said were caused by bats inside the building.
Council members raised questions about specifics and the department said it would provide contract details, grant conditions and any required local match terms at the official vote.
