Trustees accept financial and superintendent reports; staff to draft rules after green-burial vote

At its June 11 meeting, the Michigan City Board of Cemetery Trustees accepted the financial report from their investment advisor, approved bills for payment and accepted the superintendent's monthly report on cemetery operations.

A Horizon representative reviewed account yields for the permanent maintenance, extension fund and merchandise accounts and gave a brief market and macroeconomic update, noting May consumer price index and recent payroll revisions. Trustees then moved to accept the financial report as presented and the motion passed with no negatives.

Superintendent Jeff Looki reported monthly burial totals (Greenwood: four cremations and three full burials, total seven; Swan Lake: four cremations, four full burials and one other, total nine; grand total 16) and said Memorial Day ceremonies went well with compliments from local officials. He described a staff repair of a broken water line in the Sinai section at Greenwood (staff dug and fixed the line to restore water before the holiday) and said local landscaping contractor Rob Hugley donated 19 rolls of material used to repair the veterans circle. Looki also said the mayor's office arranged a visit from American Bloom judges and that the city will host WorkOne participants who will provide six weeks of supervised labor to help landscaping and marker leveling projects.

Trustees also discussed a staff vacancy and said interviews were planned; they set the next meeting for July 9, 2026.

The bills and the superintendent's report were accepted unanimously by trustees Veraston, Bernard Dunkey, Ken Oens, Davis Bush and Renee Bower.
