Lee, the organizer, asked the council to close Cleveland Street and the drive around the park beginning about 4:30 p.m. on July 5 to support a kids parade and to permit a July 8 ceremony in front of the museum. "I'm asking that the city close Cleveland Street and the drive around the park at 5:30 at 4:30 on July 5th... and on July the 8th, we can hold a public reading of the Declaration of Independence at 6 PM in front of the Veterans Military Museum," Lee said, noting the park board has approved the parade and the museum will allow use of power for sound.
The council approved the requested closures and use of museum power. Officials also noted plans to create a lane on Main Street with coordination from Deputy Chief Willis; the council stated it could arrange traffic control without state approval because the closures would be local and short-term.
Council members recorded affirmative votes to approve the events and related logistics. Organizers were told to coordinate final arrangements with city staff and public safety personnel before the events.
