Pike Road council adopts temporary pause on select uses in development code

The Town Council of Pike Road adopted an ordinance at second reading to pause select uses while the development-code update group and planning staff review and clarify standards, Mayor Graves said.
Council and planning staff described the pause as a temporary measure that allows the town to comprehensively review and revise standards for those uses across zoning types, including how traditional B-2 zoning intersects with the town’s smart-code designations. A councilor asked whether categories such as car washes, liquor stores or smoke shops are explicitly within B-2; planning staff and council said the attorney had reviewed the matter and that the pause will allow the development-code team to resolve such questions.
Councilor Watley moved to adopt the ordinance at second reading; Councilor Steindorff seconded, and the motion passed by voice vote. Council members said the pause will give staff and the development-code group time to draft clearer standards and to work through any zoning classification issues before adopting permanent changes.
What happens next: staff and the development-code group will continue their review and return to council with recommended revisions as part of the ongoing development-code update process.
