A Beecher resident told the village board on June 22 that repeated basement flooding has left her afraid to leave her home.
“My name is Raeanne James and I live at 646 Woodland Street,” James said during the public‑comment portion, adding that her basement flooded three times in one week and that water is coming up through floor/sewer areas. She said six households in her neighborhood were experiencing similar problems and that — despite plumbers’ checks and sump pumps — water continues to back up after storms.
Village staff and public works responded that sanitary and stormwater lines serving the neighborhood were televised and that the Illinois EPA was involved in 2023. A public‑works speaker said the televising and inspections produced no evidence of a village‑side sewer defect and suggested the flows appear to come from exterior saturation around the homes. The staff member said a standpipe and a partially dirt basement floor on one house indicate water is entering from outside, not through a defective village sewer.
The board encouraged affected residents to call Village Hall so staff can log complaints and build a record for follow‑up. The public‑works staff member said he would do further investigation and try to develop a plan to address the drainage at the alley corner near Hodges and the adjacent properties.
The board did not vote on a new drainage project at the meeting; staff noted previous televising and investigations had not identified an infrastructure failure but agreed to continue looking into options and said they would contact residents about next steps.
