Council members discussed the purchase during the Nov. 12 meeting. Staff said the vehicle is included in the FY25 budget and will replace an aging 2007 model that is badly rusted. "It is to replace a 2007 model vehicle, and it's badly rusted," the mayor said during the discussion. Several members stressed the need for a clear demonstration of why a new pickup is required. One council member said, "Given our...from a safety perspective, I'm a no at this point in time due to the fact that we don't know even if we can insure ourselves after this year." Another council member said he supported the purchase, noting the current vehicle's maintenance problems and the productivity and safety benefits of a properly fitted work body: "I could support the truck...I definitely see the need for another truck to replace the current truck...the work body is gonna increase productivity and probably safety."
After debate, the motion to approve the purchase passed on roll call (three in favor, two opposed). The council discussed retaining the older red truck for in-town minor tasks until it is no longer usable and said the new truck would be used to reduce wear on existing equipment.
The council did not adopt any additional limitations or conditions on the purchase during the recorded vote. The council carried the motion and moved on to the next agenda item.
