The Borough of Union City voted unanimously Aug. 13 to hire Kenneth Fye from the certified civil service list as a part‑time police officer.
Councilor Matt Joyce moved to hire Fye and Councilor Osborn seconded. Councilors who spoke during the hiring discussion said a part‑time officer would broaden coverage and cost less than hiring a full‑time officer. Borough Manager Cindy Wells told council the budget included at least $33,560 for wages and benefits and that the final cost would depend on hours worked.
Police Chief David Pernice reviewed recent department activity. "From June 1 to August 13 we had 269 calls averaging about 3.63 calls per day," Pernice said, noting a range of incidents including vehicle pursuits, protection‑from‑abuse petitions, warrants, domestic calls, drug activity, homelessness, and recent suicide and mental‑health incidents. Pernice also said he and Officer Shelly attended an Alert Active Shooter training and that the department received two awards from the Union City Community Foundation: funding for four tasers and for additional security cameras on North Main Street.
The hire follows an executive session on personnel earlier in the meeting and was approved without recorded opposition. The council did not set an exact start date in the minutes.
