Alexandria unveils Reignite parks upgrades and mall‑corridor plan, funded from Spark bond roll‑off

City parks staff described improvements at Helen Black Park, Cheetum and Franco Hunter — new playground equipment, pour‑in‑place surfacing, basketball court overlays, fencing, and landscaping timelines. Tanya, a city parks staffer, noted delivery and installation timelines: some equipment expected in July or August and additional landscaping in the fall.

Officials highlighted the nearly completed Masonic Sports Court and said security measures will accompany more active park programming. The mayor said community input from a Reignite meeting aligned closely with independent, evidence‑based plans and reported well over 100 participants and at least 150 completed surveys.

On financing, the mayor explained Reignite is designed to use the roll‑off of the prior Spark bond rather than raise new taxes. He said repurposing the mall into an experience‑driven corridor would increase walkability, attract complementary anchors and potentially unlock federal matching dollars for drainage and related infrastructure, improving the tax base without additional tax burdens.

Officials encouraged council backing and said they will collect endorsements and bring supporting resolutions to the council for consideration. Dr. Lewis offered a brief public endorsement of continuing to push the Reignite agenda.
