Perry City Council voted unanimously on June 25 to increase the employer-paid portion of retirement contributions for Tier 2 public-safety employees to 5.98%.
Finance staff explained the retirement system actuaries adjusted contribution requirements and said employers remain limited to a 10% mandated share unless they choose to pick up part of the employee portion. Staff described the resolution as binding if adopted: "If you cover it, you can't ever not cover it, so we can never go back and say, we're not covering anything," and asked whether the council wanted to continue the pickup and increase it to 5.98.
Council members asked for and received cost context; staff cited an estimated incremental annual cost on the order of $15,000. After brief discussion about budgetary implications and funding, the council approved the resolution by roll-call vote.
The change applies only to Tier 2 public-safety employees and will be implemented through payroll and benefit adjustments in the next fiscal cycle.
