District presents DCAP review, pushes work-based learning and broader FAFSA outreach

The presenter highlighted work-based learning initiatives already in development, including welding apprenticeships and a pathway linking CNA coursework to an LPN apprenticeship, and said districts in the region are at different stages of implementing such programs. School officials noted Perkins funding is integral to some apprenticeship negotiations.
The board discussed FAFSA advisement after the presenter said reviewers want FAFSA information distributed beyond counseling offices and introduced earlier in students’ course of study. Members and staff suggested adding FAFSA outreach to parent nights or tying short advisement sessions into junior-senior planning, while acknowledging that parents of younger students may not immediately engage with FAFSA messaging.
Board members and administration also described partnerships—IJAG specialists and community partners such as VODEC—to expand opportunities for students on IEPs and for broader career exploration. Administration said they will continue negotiating apprenticeship arrangements with area colleges and tracking implementation progress.
The board did not take formal action on the DCAP at this meeting; staff said they will email full materials to board members and said the DCAP review and the region’s feedback will inform next-year priorities and program planning.
