Council, staff praise summer events; discuss DOT signage limits and Fiesta scheduling

Town staff and councilors used the July 14 meeting to thank employees and volunteers for recent community events and to discuss practical issues for future activities.
Police Lieutenant Dominguez told the council: "We wanted to give thanks and everything for Cops in the Park event that we had on Friday. It was a huge success, also thank you everybody that helped us along the way and for everyone that showed up. It was a big event for the kids and the community. We just wanted to give thanks. We appreciate you all." Community Development Director Christina Jones said of the Fourth of July event: "I wanted to thank everyone for the 4th of July event. It went great, I think the Mayor's count was close, we probably had around 500 people show up." Jones also reminded the council about the town's last movie night on July 25, which will feature Guardians of the Galaxy and include a glow-in-the-dark foam party.
Councilor Montoya raised the issue of directional signage for events and recalled prior informal signs; he asked whether the town could secure a memorandum of understanding or standing permission from the New Mexico Department of Transportation to place event direction signs. Christina Jones said the town can place signs on Don Tomas but not on Main Street without DOT permission and noted the town could purchase flashing road signs at its expense. Mayor Torres suggested trying a low-tech sign for upcoming events and, if necessary, "ask for forgiveness, then we'll ask for permission."
Councilor Torres-Quintana complimented Jones on the town events webpage and asked for the Matachines schedule to be posted promptly; Jones said Rob from billing would provide the schedule this week.
The discussion included recognition of public works and event staff for setup and cleanup; no formal action or permitting decisions were recorded in the minutes during the July 14 meeting.
