Planning Commission approves 14-space parking addition at 201 Royal Park Drive to reduce on-street parking

The Zeeland Planning Commission on June 4 approved a site-plan application to add 14 parking spaces at 201 Royal Park Drive for Helping Hands Residential Care (operated by Hope Discovery). The approval was unanimous and was conditioned on final stormwater management plan approval and a one-tree landscaping waiver.
Applicant Jason Hall of Midwest Construction Group told commissioners the additional parking is needed because operations have outgrown available on-street and neighbor parking agreements, and that the new spaces would reduce street congestion and better accommodate customers and employees. Zoning Administrator Timothy Maday said the proposed expansion complies with the Zoning Ordinance’s setback, access aisle, and parking-dimension requirements, and staff supports the waiver for one canopy tree given site constraints; staff recommended conditional approval pending final stormwater review by the City’s engineering consultant.
Motion 2026.08, moved by Commissioner Daniel Klompmaker and supported by Commissioner Rick VanDorp, approved the site plan with the two conditions: (a) stormwater management plan approval and (b) one landscaping waiver allowing relocation of an existing canopy tree. The roll-call vote was recorded as Ayes: Perkins, Holstege, Klompmaker, VanDorp, Chairman Bill Elhart; Nays: none; Absent: Otteman, Blanton, Klunder.
Next steps: The Commission’s action allows applicants to proceed to final engineering and permitting once the outstanding stormwater review is approved by the City’s engineering consultant.
