Oneida County forestry committee elects Briggs vice-chair, hears stumpage and WDNR reports, and goes into closed session

The Oneida County Forestry, Land & Recreation Committee elected Briggs as vice-chair and reviewed departmental updates, stumpage revenue and a WDNR seasonal report at its June 2 meeting in Rhinelander.
Committee member Schultz nominated Briggs for vice-chair; Lopez seconded, Chair Robert Almekinder closed nominations and the committee voted all aye to elect Briggs. Earlier the committee approved the minutes of the May 12, 2026 meeting on a motion by Briggs, seconded by Lopez.
Forestry staff member Rady reported May stumpage receipts of $91,022.91, bringing year-to-date stumpage to $314,613.30; staff noted four active jobs and that the Mosinee mill is no longer accepting softwood pulpwood. Tanya Tischendorf said the change to an earlier meeting date will delay the Invoices Paid and Budget-to-Actual reports until the next meeting.
Nemec told the committee about a Girl Scouts invasive-species project to remove knapweed at Townline Lake Park and said the Almon Park beach toilet/changing room roof replacement is complete; staff reported positive feedback on removal of a beach retaining wall. Nemec also said several land issues (access licenses, encroachment, deer stand violations) will be brought to future meetings.
WDNR liaison Sydney Kottke reported Oneida County is at 104% of the allowed annual labor hour standards and that the Rhinelander team will continue reconnaissance and establishment work. Kottke said fire staffing was ending for the season, with nine fires burning approximately 4.46 acres. DNR Wildlife Biologist Rollman was not present but informed staff that the Whitetail grant is nearly ready to submit.
The committee announced future agenda items including June 7, 2026 meeting date and listed invoices paid & Budget-to-Actual reports for May and access license agreements as upcoming items. The committee then moved into closed session at 10:48 a.m. under Wisconsin Statutes Sec. 19.85(1)(e) to deliberate or negotiate public property purchases or other specified public business (topics listed: Luber Lane Cell Tower Lease and approval of April 14, 2026 closed meeting minutes). The committee returned to open session at 10:57 a.m. and announced it had approved the April 14, 2026 closed-session minutes. Chair Almekinder adjourned the meeting at 10:58 a.m.
