Consultant outlines YMCA Aquatic Park splash pad design, targets June 2027 opening

Cole Moeller of Commercial Recreation Specialists presented a design update on April 20 to the Maquoketa City Council for the YMCA Aquatic Park splash pad, saying the project includes age-specific water elements and an elevated play structure modeled after a local water tower. ‘‘It is expected for the splash pad to be open for use in June 2027,’’ Moeller said.
The consultant said the design includes an onsite recirculation system intended to maintain water quality and lower long-term operating costs, and a lightning detection system that can automatically shut off water features if lightning is detected within a five-mile radius. City officials pressed Moeller on options for finishing concrete surfaces and the anticipated long-term maintenance costs to the city.
Moeller and City Manager Joshua Boldt described three primary concrete finishing options that will be decided when the project goes to bid: coloring, staining or painting. Each option has differing price points and expected longevity; council members asked staff to provide those cost comparisons during the bidding process. The council took no formal action on the project at the April 20 meeting.
The splash pad timeline, as presented, targets summer 2027 for opening; funding sources and final construction schedule were not specified at the meeting. Staff said more detailed cost and maintenance estimates will be available once the city solicits bids.
