Board introduces ordinance setting jail booking fee at $214 for FY 2026–27

The board formally opened a public hearing and introduced an ordinance setting the county’s jail booking fee rate for fiscal year 2026–27 at $214 per booking, Finance staff said.
Rob Knudson of the Department of Finance presented the ordinance, explaining that Government Code §29550 requires counties to calculate and set the rate each year and that the $214 rate reflects higher employee salaries, benefits, utility and IT costs. Knudson said the county has limited current authority to pass the charge to cities or to add the charge to convicted defendants’ fines due to state law changes, but the annual calculation and ordinance remain required as a formal step.
The board opened and closed the public hearing with no public comment and voted to introduce the ordinance and waive reading; Knudson said he will return next week with the final approval for the second reading.
