Kanab discusses annexation north of the city to secure long‑term fire protection

City staff and councilors discussed options to address gaps in fire protection north of Kanab at the June 9 meeting. City Manager Kyler Ludwig said the one‑year Fire Protection Agreement with Kane County, under which Kanab provided structure fire response to certain unincorporated properties, expires on June 30, 2026 and was intended as a temporary measure while long‑term solutions were developed.
Staff and county partners have evaluated annexation of contiguous properties into Kanab City and incorporation of noncontiguous properties into the Vermillion Cliffs Special Service District as options to provide enduring service arrangements. The proposed amendment would extend the existing service agreement through December 31, 2026 to allow time for annexation or district boundary adjustments, with no substantive changes to service provisions or billing methodology.
Mayor Johnson said that if annexation proceeds he prefers to keep current county zoning in place to maintain consistency with existing uses. Council discussed the proposed annexation area and thanked the county for the work; no formal action was taken at the June 9 meeting.
