Kanab adopts wildfire suppression agreement, mutual‑aid MOU and updated CWPP

The Kanab City Council approved several measures on June 9 to sustain and coordinate local wildfire response with state partners. City Manager Kyler Ludwig explained that the five‑year Cooperative Wildland Fire Suppression Agreement with the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands (FFSL) sets Kanab as the primary initial attack responder on non‑federal lands and makes FFSL financially responsible for suppression costs after a Delegation of Fire Management Authority occurs.
Council also approved the Utah Wildfire Resource Memorandum of Understanding, a five‑year MOU allowing the Kanab Fire Department to assist on statewide wildfire incidents and receive reimbursement for personnel and equipment used when authorized. The MOU includes training, certification, equipment and reporting requirements to maintain eligibility for reimbursement.
Separately, the council adopted the updated Community Wildfire Preparedness Plan (CWPP) dated May 2026, revised to conform to the state’s new template and planning requirements. Mr. Ludwig said the updates are primarily administrative, with finalized agency contacts and signatories to be completed before execution. Councilmember Heaton moved to adopt Resolution 6-2-26 R for the suppression agreement, Resolution 6-3-26 R for the MOU, and Resolution 6-4-26 R for the CWPP; all motions passed unanimously with Councilmember Banks absent.
The combined actions preserve Kanab’s participation in statewide wildfire response frameworks and maintain eligibility for state reimbursement and coordinated suppression support.
