Rangely council pledges $3,500 to CNCC aviation team headed to national competition

Students from Colorado Northwestern Community College and the aviation program director asked the council for help raising the remaining funds needed to send the CNCC NAIFA aviation team to Nationals.
John Roberts, a CNCC aviation student and co-captain of the team, said the team had raised about $33,000 but needed roughly $40,000 to travel to the competition in Wisconsin. "We're just falling a little bit short," Roberts said, describing team fundraisers and community work to offset costs.
Nathan Hard, CNCC’s aviation program director, explained the cost drivers — travel, lodging and equipment — and emphasized the program’s value to local workforce development. "It's incredibly expensive because it's really far and we're going to be gone for a grand total of about 14 days," Hard said.
Council members praised the program’s regional profile and economic-development value and moved to provide $3,500 from the town’s public giving account toward the team’s travel. Several members encouraged additional fundraising and use of sponsorship opportunities (including offering the town seal on apparel to support fundraising). The motion passed by voice vote.
Council also noted that Rangely will host regional competition next year, which the students said would bring several schools from the Rocky Mountain region to town.
What’s next: The council asked the students to return if they need additional assistance; the town’s contribution was recorded as $3,500 from the public giving account.
