Gail Hendrickson, Community Development Director, said three positions were expiring and two sitting commissioners — Jeremy Lender and Wayne Carmichael — had applied for reappointment. Two outside applicants were interviewed: Philip Brew (appeared as Philip Broom in the live interview) and Claire Shroof. After discussion about lived experience in South County and the value of construction experience for processing housing applications, commissioners voted to reappoint Lender and Carmichael and to appoint Philip Brew (motion recorded as Philip Sanders Broom) to a term ending June 30, 2030.
Commissioners debated whether to prioritize geographic and gender representation or practical construction experience. Commissioner Webb argued for maintaining a female presence on the commission and noted state restrictions on professional concentrations; other commissioners said Mr. Brew's construction and project management experience (including work on Seaside High School) made him especially qualified at this time.
The board recorded votes in favor and the appointments will be reflected in the upcoming regular meeting agenda and minutes. Gail Hendrickson said staff will process oaths and appointment paperwork.
