The Hearne Board of Education unanimously adopted the district’s budget for the 2627 school year and approved the district’s tax‑levy request for 2026 taxes payable in 2027 during its June 22 special meeting.
Chairman Van Bercum moved to adopt the budget as submitted by the business manager; the motion, seconded, passed on a roll‑call vote with all members voting aye. Van Bercum publicly thanked Kelly for her work preparing the budget.
Dr. Steinhoff, the superintendent, said staff recently attended the South Dakota Department of Education literacy conference and reiterated that district planning and curriculum work will continue alongside budget implementation. Kelly explained the tax‑levy package that will be sent to county auditors and said the district spans three counties. She noted a statutory change lowered the owner‑occupied levy to 0.669 from more than $1.00 in prior years.
The board held a budget hearing at its previous meeting and recorded no additional questions at the June 22 vote. The board indicated the adopted budget and levy request will be delivered to the respective county auditors as required.
