Sheriff Tom Kleinhelter updated the Dubois County Commissioners on jail population and staffing and requested approval of a preventative maintenance agreement for the security center.
Kleinhelter said 59 inmates are currently housed in the security center and that the department is hiring three deputies from seven candidates (three jailer candidates and four outside candidates). He reported early discussions with a medical school about a residency program to provide an in‑house psychiatric doctor; an MOU is being prepared and will be reviewed by the county attorney, and Kleinhelter said he hopes the program can begin in July 2026.
Kleinhelter also noted deputies are working to provide safety on 800 S in response to public concerns tied to Crossvine Solar activity and that, per county ordinance where speed limits are not posted, a 45 mph standard applies. He asked County Engineer Leffert to review signage and driveway‑entrance concerns in the area.
On preventative facility maintenance, Kleinhelter requested approval of an agreement with Messmer Mechanical at a cost of $9,985 to cover chiller units, boilers, air handlers, kitchen hoods and exhaust systems, mini‑split systems and water pumps. A motion to approve the agreement, pending receipt of the final document, was seconded and carried unanimously.
The board recorded no further action on new vehicle purchases for the department.
