County outlines bridge closures, timelines and paving plans for summer construction season

County highway staff told the Dubois County Commissioners on April 20 that several road and bridge projects will affect traffic this spring and summer.
Highway Engineer Levi Leffert said in‑house paving bid packages for 2026 include six projects covering 12 road sections (totaling 10.13 miles). The county advertised the projects April 16; bids will be opened and read aloud at the May 4 commissioner meeting. Paving is scheduled to begin no earlier than June 1 and must be completed by Sept. 30, 2026.
Leffert updated ongoing bridge work: Bridge 78 (CR 600W over the Patoka River) was closed April 9 for demolition and repair by Blankenberger Brothers, with an anticipated full closure of up to 60 days and reopening expected in early to mid‑June if weather permits. Bridge 119 (Club Road) demolition and concrete work is ahead of schedule and expected to reopen by the end of the week. Deck overlays on Bridges 107 and 240 (St. Anthony Road N and W) are scheduled to start on or around May 7; C&R Construction will perform rigid deck overlays and both bridges will require full closures for an estimated four to five weeks.
Leffert also described a small bridge replacement on Dubois Road NE, noting crews are preparing beams and that work will be coordinated with the local school district to avoid bus‑route impacts; if significant disruption is likely, work may be delayed until summer vacation.
On regional projects, the SR 64/162 roundabout (Bretzville Junction) contract was awarded to Ragle at INDOT’s April 15 letting; construction is expected to begin this summer with completion by the end of 2026. Leffert said the Maintenance of Traffic plan intends to maintain both lanes of travel except for a short SR 162 closure for culvert replacement.
Separately, Leffert noted the county submitted an RFP to INDOT for a federally funded bridge safety/guardrail improvement project; LOIs were received and will be scored internally to select a consultant, and the county must enter a contract by Aug. 1, 2026 to meet grant timelines.
The board did not take controversial votes on these status reports; several items will return for bid openings and contract approvals at future meetings.
