Irving previews expanded Sparks & Stripes July 3–4 celebration with bigger drone show and a three‑jet flyover

Kyle Conway, the city’s special events supervisor in the Parks and Recreation Department, told the council the July 3 program at Levy Event Plaza will include live music and a drone show, and the July 4 programming will move to Heritage Park for a hometown parade and family activities. Conway said the drone show this year uses more drones to create a higher‑resolution aerial image and that the fireworks display will run roughly 18 to 20 minutes with about 1,600 individual shots.
Conway also described a planned aerial flyover of three decommissioned military jets, each trailing red, white and blue smoke. He said the pilots will be private contractors and that the aircraft cannot fly closer than 1,000 feet to the crowd and will make two passes timed to end as the national anthem finishes. "They said they could lose their licenses if they do that," Conway said of the spacing requirement.
The parks teams have also made operational changes intended to ease flows for load‑in and load‑out and to improve amenities. Conway said the layout will include an additional bank of restrooms doubled from last year, a new drone launch area behind the stage for better sightlines, a larger drone fleet for higher‑resolution imagery and more food trucks and family activities. He said some VIP amenities and a water distribution point also will be provided.
Conway identified event sponsors and partners, saying HB will donate several pallets of water and watermelon and provide discounted food for a VIP area. He emphasized coordination with nearby venues, noting scheduling and traffic plans took into account a large nearby concert and World Cup events. "We're going to try to end as close to 10 as possible," Conway said, citing coordination with a nearby headline concert.
Councilmembers asked practical questions about logistics and how the flyover was contracted; Conway said the jet passes are handled by private airshow contractors that employ former military pilots. The city also reminded the public that fireworks will not be permitted in Heritage Park on July 4 under local rules.
The presentation closed with staff inviting questions and noting that more operational details and public safety coordination will continue ahead of the holiday weekend.
