Avon Town Council swears in two new police officers

The Avon Town Council on June 25 hosted a swearing-in ceremony for two newly hired Avon Police Department officers, who each took the oath of office administered by Superior Court 2 Judge Red Stewart.

Judge Red Stewart told the new officers their conduct in the community shapes public perception of policing and urged them to treat people with respect and ‘‘come home safe’’ at the end of each shift. ‘‘If you do all those things ... you can change the perception of the police,’’ Stewart said.

Council and department remarks introduced the officers’ backgrounds. The chief read a biography of the first officer, identified in the transcript as Adam (introduced in the presentation as Adam Sjac), noting previous service with the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Office, college study in sociology, and prior service in the U.S. Navy, where the officer earned multiple awards. The officer recited the oath, affirming to ‘‘defend the Constitution of the United States of America and the state of Indiana’’ and to perform duties ‘‘impartially, fairly and to the best of my ability.’’ Applause followed.

The chief also introduced Officer Jacob Redmond, whose prior service includes U.S. Army and Indiana National Guard duty and several military awards, and who likewise took the oath of office before the council and attendees.

After the ceremony the council returned to its regular meeting agenda and approved the consent agenda, including the check register and meeting minutes.

The council’s next meeting is scheduled for July 9, with a 5:30 p.m. work session to begin budget discussions.
