Irving council honors outgoing mayor and swears in new mayor and council

Irving marked a leadership transition June 25 with tributes for outgoing Mayor Rick Stoofer and an oath-of-office ceremony for the incoming mayor and council members.
In opening remarks and a presentation that included a video reading from U.S. Rep. Mark VC, staff from several state and federal offices and neighboring elected officials praised Stoofer’s decades of service to Irving. Staffers who spoke described his role in local economic development and regional transportation boards and presented a memorial resolution and a keepsake book of messages and photos.
Later in the meeting Municipal Court Judge Michael Akuna administered oaths of office. Fahad Ahmed was sworn in as councilmember for District 6; Abdul Kabir took the oath for District 3; Mark Croninowed was sworn for District 5; and Albert C. Sapont was sworn in as mayor. Each new official spoke briefly after taking the oath — Ahmed noted his immigrant background and thanked voters; Kabir and Croninowed thanked supporters and city staff; Sapont, who identified family members present, highlighted Irving’s diversity and said he intended to demonstrate cooperative leadership.
The council recessed briefly for a reception after the swearing-in and reconvened for the regular meeting and subsequent agenda items.
The swearing-in was ceremonial; no policy votes accompanied the oaths. The council moved on to public hearings and zoning matters after the reception.
