Commissioners sign bids and settlement, hear updates on paving and bridge closures

The Dubois County Commissioners on May 18 accepted previously awarded bids for six paving contracts and signed a damage settlement with CenterPoint Energy related to 11.613 acres on State Road 162.
Highway Engineer Levi Leffert presented Bid Form 96 to formally accept awards for projects 26-02 (CalCar Paving), 26-03 (C&R Construction), 26-04 (CalCar Paving), 26-05 (CalCar Paving), 26-06 (JH Rudolph) and 26-07 (C&R Construction). The board signed the forms, completing the formal acceptance of those contracts.
Leffert also updated the board on multiple bridge projects: Blankenberger Brothers, Inc. is on schedule to pour the rigid deck overlay for Bridge 78 (CR 600 W over the Patoka River), with contractor work and curing expected before approach and guardrail work; the bridge will remain closed to through traffic during construction. Concrete overlays were scheduled this week for Bridges 107 and 240, with openings expected in early June, while Small Structure #16 was closed May 6 for beam and deck replacement with reopening anticipated within two weeks. Bridge 36 (Celestine Road N) is planned to close around June 1 for a roughly five-week deck replacement.
Highway Superintendent Donnie Lueken said chip-seal patching is planned to start the week of June 1, with patches taking approximately three to four weeks followed by overlays that could last about a month.
The board voted to approve signing the CenterPoint settlement; Commissioner Blessinger signed the document and Auditor Sandra L. Morton attested the signature. The board also discussed right-of-way concerns including keeping yard signs off the road rights-of-way and a policy allowing the Highway Department to pick up signs placed in the right-of-way and hold them for two weeks before disposal.
Leffert noted Crossvine Solar has submitted revised bore/cut permit applications for utilities in the 500W right-of-way and proposed daily road closures of roughly two weeks from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; the board discussed safety and closure logistics and asked staff to review concerns.
