Dubois County details bridge repairs, bridge closure and road maintenance plans

County engineers reported near-term completions on multiple bridge projects, completed work on a small structure, and announced a planned 5–6 week closure of Bridge 36 for deck replacement starting June 3.
Highway Engineer Levi Leffert briefed the commissioners on several bridge and road projects. Blankenberger Brothers is nearing completion of Bridge 78 (CR 600 W over the Patoka River) with asphalt approaches, guardrail and markings remaining; reopening was expected by week's end, weather permitting. C&R Construction is finishing deck work on Bridge 107 and Bridge 240; asphalt approaches will be installed after decks finish curing.
Leffert said the crew completed Small Structure #16 on Dubois Road NE with a new concrete deck and steel beams; temporary stone approaches are in place and asphalt transitions will be installed later. He also announced a planned closure of Bridge 36 (Celestine Road N) beginning June 3 to replace the deck and steel beams. Bridge 36 is posted with a 20-ton load limit and the closure is expected to last about five to six weeks, pending weather.
Highway Superintendent Donnie Lueken also reported the patching schedule (beginning the week of June 8), attendance at the IACHES conference, and ongoing issues with GPS routing drivers onto dirt roads (600 E, 450 E, and North Cherry Street) despite "Pavement ends – Dirt Road ahead" signs; the department plans to try different signage. Lueken requested use of leftover paving project funds to hot-mix a roughly 211-foot county section of Gun Club Road while the City of Jasper paves adjacent areas; the board gave consensus to proceed.
Engineers did not provide additional budgetary figures for these projects in the minutes; contractors named in the report included Blankenberger Brothers and C&R Construction.
