Redevelopment commission extends Newport Landing purchase agreement to year-end to allow remediation

Bert Cook, executive director of the LaPorte Economic Advancement Partnership, presented a third amendment to the real-estate purchase agreement for the last remaining parcel in Newport Landing and asked the commission to extend the agreement through Dec. 31, 2026 to allow time for required remediation and certification work.
"We're asking to extend this to the end of the year just to try and give us some time," Cook said, adding that remediation quotes are expected to be presented at the next meeting and that, once remediation and certifications are complete, the developer — identified as Corey Dattimo — will proceed to closing. Cook called the remediation and certifications the "linchpin" to completing the sale and said he expects a closing by the end of summer or early fall if work proceeds on schedule.
A motion to approve the amendment was made, seconded and approved by the commission by voice vote, 4-0. No amendments to the motion were recorded and no public objections were raised at the meeting.
The amendment preserves the redevelopment commission's ability to complete the sale contingent on remediation and certification; Cook said staff will return with remediation quotes at the next meeting. The commission did not set a further deadline beyond the year-end extension recorded in the amendment.
