Highway superintendent reports on roadwork, Lone Star West progress; gravel bids to affect 2025–26 plan

Highway Superintendent Theis updated the Polk County Board of Commissioners on June 17 about ongoing roadwork and upcoming decisions affecting the county’s gravel program.
Theis said he has received an inquiry about upgrading a portion of a minimum maintenance road to local-road status to serve a new home and is researching the process. He reported parts needed to repair a county truck are at least three weeks away; MasterTek will pick up the truck once parts arrive. Crews were able to maintain many roads the previous week and heavy rain helped firm up surfaces, and Theis showed the board a map of recent gravel applications.
A representative from JEO told the board that the Lone Star West project has been approved by Congressman Flood and will be forwarded to the appropriations committee for further review. Gravel bids will be opened next week; new gravel prices will help determine how many of the county’s nearly 700 miles of gravel roads can be graveled during fiscal 2025–26.
