Commission backs turf-infield project for four county parks; mayor and parks director to plan funding

The Bradley County Commission voted Dec. 15 to support an initiative to install turf on the infields of the county's four parks and asked the mayor and the Parks & Recreation director to prepare project planning and funding recommendations.
Committee materials and an Ad Hoc Athletic Field Improvement Committee meeting presented cost estimates to the commission: a single infield-only installation was quoted at roughly $1.1 million; a full-field turf installation on a single park field was quoted at about $1.8 million; and a committee estimate for completing infields at multiple parks was presented at approximately $4.1 million for the combined scope. The Parks & Recreation director said fields could be completed in phases and that turfing Elrod Park — by virtue of field size and multi-sport use — may give the county greater near-term benefit.
Mayor D. Gary Davis noted that phasing the work could allow the county to pursue grant funding or other financing mechanisms and asked staff to include funding options in their planning. The commission's support vote was unanimous; the next step is development of a project plan and funding analysis by the mayor's office and the Parks & Recreation director.
