Alburnett council adopts FY26 budget amendment increasing public-safety spending authority

The Alburnett City Council on Tuesday adopted Resolution 05-2026-12, approving a second amendment to the city’s FY2026 budget to authorize additional spending in the public-safety fund.
At a special meeting called to order at 5:00 p.m., the council opened a public hearing on the amendment and heard no public comment before moving to final consideration. The resolution, as presented, increases spending authority by $137,285 to reflect grants and donations received by the Otter Creek Alburnett Fire Department and notes that the amendment does not change the property tax levy.
Explaining the amendment, the City clerk said, “We are adding $42,660 to our public safety fund. This is based on grants and additional revenue that was received by our wonderful fire department.” The clerk said a system-input error caused the packet to display $137,285; “We don’t need that much. It was just input error,” the clerk added. Council was told the city will only expend the amount tied to the grants and donations.
The clerk also noted a correction to the beginning fund balance used in the packet. The document showed a projected balance of $1,242,000, but the clerk said the figure from the annual financial report is closer to $1.6 million, and that the city’s fund balance remains healthy even after the amendment.
Councilmember Myers moved to adopt Resolution 05-2026-12; Councilmember Sukup seconded. The council conducted a roll-call vote, with Councilmembers Bosenberg, Trow, Sukup, West and Myers voting aye. The motion passed unanimously.
The resolution directs the City Clerk to certify and file the adopted budget amendment with the Linn County Auditor. The council adjourned the special meeting at 5:07 p.m.
