Dawes County adopts hazard mitigation resolution to pursue FEMA reimbursements

Dawes County commissioners voted Sept. 9 to adopt Hazard Mitigation Resolution No. 2025-23, a measure county officials said will enable planning for natural hazards and make the county eligible for Federal Emergency Management Agency reimbursements.
Commissioner Walter Juhlin introduced the resolution and Commissioner Jake Stewart read it aloud before the Board approved it by roll call. Commissioners said adoption is a standard step to position the county for future federal hazard-mitigation funding.
Why it matters: Hazard mitigation planning and a formal resolution are prerequisites for many FEMA grant and reimbursement programs. The Board’s action does not by itself obligate county spending but opens eligibility for grant-funded planning and recovery assistance.
The resolution was adopted during the regular meeting in the Commissioner Room in Chadron; resolutions are available for public inspection at the County Clerk’s Office during normal business hours.
