Adams County approves purchase of Brandner Ditch water rights and broker agreement to secure park water supplies

Adams County commissioners approved a purchase-and-sale agreement to acquire shares of the Brandner Ditch (seniority on the South Platte River) from the Roy and Charmaine Rensow Trust (dated Jan. 27, 2026) and separately approved an exclusive right-to-buy listing with Hydrosource Incorporated to facilitate the transaction.
Byron Fanning, presenting for Parks, Open Space and Cultural Arts, said the county has used a water broker to source senior shares that would address augmentation needs for county lakes and provide winter watering capacity for the golf course and other park areas. "We work with a water broker to source valuable shares in the Brandner Ditch, which are the most senior water rights on the South Platte River, which date back to 1860," Fanning said, framing the purchase as important to ecosystem, recreational use and park operations.
The board moved and approved the resolution authorizing the purchase and then approved the broker agreement authorizing payment of applicable broker fees. Commissioners made no additional changes and did not record roll-call vote tallies in the spoken record.
