Board approves $7.17M amendment for Transportation Center expansion, adds controls and furniture purchases

The Fort Wayne Community Schools Board approved a construction contract amendment with Hagerman Incorporated for the Transportation Center expansion and renovation totaling $7,167,745, and accepted a separate contract with Automated Logic for temperature controls at the facility for $218,420.
Heather Krebs, facilities director, told trustees the expansion adds roughly 8,000 square feet to existing office operations and about 2,600 square feet for driver training space; the renovation will also replace bus lifts. Krebs said the project’s schedule targets beginning phases within a few weeks and plans to occupy the renovated space around the start of the following school year, describing the timetable as "a little over a year for completion." Krebs said the amendment established the final guaranteed maximum price for the project and that Automated Logic is the single-source vendor for the controls work.
The board voted to approve the amendment by voice vote. Trustees also approved purchase of office furniture from Sealy Office Solutions for $337,278.26 to furnish HR and the new Transportation Center spaces. Krebs said pricing was secured through cooperative purchasing and that funding will come from the 2023 General Obligation Bond and the 2026 Facilities Improvement Lease bond.
Board members asked whether work had started and whether the project remained within budget; Krebs said construction had not yet started but that the project is within program budget and that furniture moves will occur after phases are completed in 2027.
