Zoning board approves generator setback variance for Parnell Drive homeowners

The Waterford Township Zoning Board of Appeals voted unanimously (7-0) on March 17 to grant a 2.5-foot side-yard variance to Cari and Gregory Mekjian to place a backup generator at 4441 Parnell Drive, reducing the required 5-foot side-yard setback to 2.5 feet.
Cari Mekjian told the board the family keeps saltwater aquariums and sought reliable power when traveling: "We have saltwater aquariums and are concerned about losing power to them if we are away from home traveling," she said, adding that reliable power is needed for "peace of mind and flexibility." The proposed generator location is adjacent to existing air conditioning units and would allow required screening.
Board discussion raised emergency-access concerns; Board Member Sue Camilleri noted rear-yard access is needed for emergency personnel but acknowledged that existing vegetation and the AC unit limit access on that side of the house and that there is access on the other side. The board found the requested location to be appropriate for this site and concluded practical difficulties exist. The motion to approve, moved by Todd Hoffman and supported by Art Frasca, carried unanimously by roll call (7-0).
Staff noted screening requirements and that the variance would still permit required landscaping and screening.
