Willie Burton sworn in to FWCS board; district recognizes students and announces several principal appointments

Willie Burton was sworn in Monday to the Fort Wayne Community Schools Board of Trustees after being voted to fill the District 3 seat on June 8. Angela Filler, the district clerk, administered the oath of office as Dr. Mark Daniel, the superintendent, welcomed Burton to the board.
The board recognized student achievement before routine business. Members acknowledged the Weisser Park Koala Bots robotics team for qualifying for the 2026 VEX Robotics World Championship in St. Louis and named coaches and school leaders in attendance. The board also recognized Neve Quinn, a 2026 graduate of New Tech Academy at Wayne, for receiving a college-sponsored National Merit Scholarship; the board announced Quinn will attend Indiana University to study mathematics.
Superintendent Dr. Mark Daniel introduced a series of district appointments. Rina Chauhan was presented as the new executive director of the Fort Wayne Community Schools Foundation, with Daniel summarizing her decade-plus nonprofit fundraising and partnership experience. The board also announced several school leadership changes and hires, naming Melissa Plum as elementary director, Jason Bosley as Waynedale Elementary principal, Jessica Harris for the Center for Academic Success at Anthis, Rachel BlackHawk as a middle school principal, Allison Erwin for the STEM magnet school, Heather Thompson as Weisser Park STEAM principal, and Rachel Rochelle Miller returning to the district in a leadership role. Dr. Daniel described each appointee’s prior roles and responsibilities.
The recognitions and personnel items were presented for the board’s information and received general congratulatory remarks from trustees. No policy changes or funding actions were associated with the recognitions themselves.
The meeting proceeded to the business agenda following these introductions and recognitions.
