Britt council roundup: public forum concerns, police training approved, software upgrade and Parks funds moved

The Britt City Council’s Sept. 23 meeting included several routine approvals and community comments alongside the day's two headline actions.
During the public forum, resident John Bowman urged the council to address safety on the curves north of town and suggested straightening the roadway. Resident Pat Byers requested updates to the city website, regular budget and monthly reporting, and an updated ordinance book.
On departmental business, the council approved a Police Department Academy contract for Officer Maddox Beminio and agreed the city will reimburse meal receipts because the academy (on a college campus) does not supply meals, a change noted by Chief Martinez. Council members also discussed replacing the 2018 PD truck in the 2027 budget but deferred action to a future meeting. The council discussed obtaining quotes for professional headshots for police and city personnel and asked staff to return quotes at the next meeting.
Financial and administrative items approved included moving $2,688.15 from city checking to the Parks and Recreation Can Account (Hobo Run proceeds) and authorizing a computer software upgrade for city hall. The council tabled action on asbestos removal at 188 4th Ave. NE, and on next steps for 59 Main Ave S (council discussed replacing stairs and possibly listing the property for sale). Discussion of pool lifeguard chairs was also tabled. The City Administrator read postcards from students complimenting the Draft Horse show. Council reviewed an IMWCA Workman’s Compensation report and noted the city’s low claim rate.
The council voted to go into closed session under Iowa Code 21.5(1)(i) to discuss personnel matters and later took the actions described in other articles in these minutes. The meeting adjourned following those actions.
