Britt, Iowa — The Britt City Council on Aug. 5 approved a series of routine claims and infrastructure payments, accepted a property transfer, and swore in a new police officer.
Mayor Jim Nelson called the meeting to order. Council members Ashley Weiss, T. Hildman, L. Mosher and D. Peterson were present; Nelson was noted as absent. The council approved the published agenda after removing one mayor’s report item.
During the public forum, resident Pat Byers said the city had “missed a golden opportunity” to tell residents that so-called flushable wipes do not fully process in the sewer system and may be contributing to repairs. Serena Golwitzer reported recent water backups; the council scheduled a Public Works planning meeting for Aug. 12 to address related issues, and Mayor Nelson said staff are working on affected areas.
Under department reports, Linda Friedow said the library is accepting part-time applications. Public Works noted that sump pumps must discharge to yards rather than into the sewer system, per ordinance 6-2-5(1).
On formal actions, the council approved the consent agenda, including minutes for July meetings and a claims report totaling $647,900.17. It also adopted Resolution 15-2025 to accept the acquisition of 188 4th Avenue NE (Lot 7, Block 1, Maple Hill Addition), Parcel No. 2203010070.
The council approved repair and equipment items for city facilities. It approved Dean Meyers’ quote of $1,800 to replace the police department electrical panel and a $9,000 quote for generator replacement, contingent on a bid from Alliant for a gas line. Pay Application #31 for the water treatment plant for $8,737.76 and Pay Application #2 for the CIPP sanitary sewer lining project for $212,504.03 were both approved.
Council also approved Iowa Pump Works’ $7,371.00 proposal to replace a failed pump. The minutes list this item under the aquatic center strainer and pump replacement but in the approval language reference the pump at the sewer plant; the transcript language is inconsistent on the exact location (see clarifying details).
The council agreed to begin the procurement process for a new snowblower and mower and will further consider hiring a temporary part-time public works worker at the Aug. 12 Public Works meeting. An item on replacing pool chairs, tables and umbrellas was tabled. The council approved reimbursement to the Britt Golf Course for mowing equipment parts totaling $12,373.63 and voted to move the Sept. 16 meeting to Sept. 23, 2025 to accommodate the Iowa League of Cities annual conference.
Maddox Beminio was sworn in as a new police officer during the meeting.
